CBSE Class 10 Mathematics: A Chapter-Wise Preparation Strategy

GyanSanchar · 24 Oct 2026

Class 10 Mathematics is a scoring subject, since every answer is either right or wrong and marks follow steps. A plan by chapter helps you spend your time where it counts.

Step 1: Know the paper

Check the latest marking scheme and sample paper on the CBSE website. They show the marks for each unit and the mix of question types: short, long, case-based and assertion-reason. Marks per chapter can change, so use the current document.

Step 2: Group the chapters

Algebra

Real Numbers, Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations and Arithmetic Progressions. Heavy in marks and based on practice. Learn the formulas, then solve many types of questions.

Geometry and Trigonometry

Triangles, Circles, Introduction to Trigonometry and Applications of Trigonometry. Learn theorems with proofs, practice diagrams and memorize the trigonometric values and identities.

Coordinate Geometry and Mensuration

Distance, section and area formulas, then Areas Related to Circles and Surface Areas and Volumes. Most are formula based, so accuracy matters.

Statistics and Probability

Mean, median and mode of grouped data and basic probability. These are some of the easiest marks if you practice the methods.

Step 3: Use NCERT well

  • Solve every NCERT example and exercise question, including the optional ones.

  • Then move to the NCERT Exemplar for harder questions.

  • Redo questions you got wrong after a week.

Step 4: Practice the new question types

Case-based and assertion-reason questions test understanding of a situation, not only a formula. Practice reading a short passage, picking out the data and applying the right idea.

Step 5: Write for marks

  • Write the formula first, then substitute.

  • Show each step on a new line. Marks are given for steps even if the final answer is wrong.

  • Draw clean, labelled figures for geometry and trigonometry.

  • Write units and the final answer clearly.

Step 6: Revise with sample papers

In the last two months, solve one full sample paper every week in 3 hours, then check it against the marking scheme. See our article on common mistakes in Class 10 Maths for what to watch out for.
