CBSE Class 10 Science: How to Prepare with NCERT and Score High

GyanSanchar · 25 Oct 2026

The CBSE Class 10 Science paper draws heavily on the NCERT textbook. Students who read it carefully, practise diagrams and equations, and solve questions regularly do well, with or without extra books.

Step 1: Read NCERT line by line

Read every paragraph, box, table and diagram, including the "in-text" questions. Many board questions are taken directly from these parts or built from them.

Step 2: Subject-wise approach

Chemistry

  • Practise writing and balancing chemical equations until it is automatic.

  • Learn the reactions of acids, bases and metals, with the observations and conditions.

  • For Carbon and its Compounds, practise naming, structures and the main reactions.

Physics

  • Learn the formulas and units of Electricity, and solve many numericals.

  • Practise ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, including sign conventions.

  • Understand the magnetic effects of current with the rules and diagrams.

Biology

  • Learn the diagrams of the human digestive system, heart, nephron, neuron and the reproductive parts. Label and practise them.

  • Write definitions and processes in a few clear points.

  • Understand Heredity with simple cross problems.

Step 3: Practise question types

  • Short and long answer questions from NCERT and previous papers.

  • Case-based questions that give a passage or data and ask several linked questions.

  • Assertion-reason questions that test whether you understand cause and effect.

  • Practical-based questions from the activities in the textbook.

Step 4: Revise by writing

Make one-page notes for each chapter and rewrite key equations and diagrams from memory. Revising by writing is more effective than rereading.

Step 5: Time yourself

Solve past papers in 3 hours. Practise leaving enough time for the long answers and the diagrams, since they carry good marks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping NCERT for guide books.

  • Leaving diagrams unlabelled or untidy.

  • Forgetting units in numericals.
