How to Start NEET Preparation from Class 11: A Step-by-Step Plan

GyanSanchar · 29 Oct 2026

NEET UG is the entrance exam for MBBS, BDS and other medical courses in India. The syllabus is large, but a student who starts in Class 11 with a plan has two full years to cover it twice. Here is how to begin.

Know the paper first

NEET UG tests Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology). In recent years the paper has had 180 questions for 720 marks, with 4 marks for a correct answer and a 1-mark deduction for a wrong one. Biology carries half of the total marks, so it deserves half of your effort. Rules can change, so check the NTA information bulletin every year.

Step 1: Make NCERT your base

For Biology, read the NCERT textbook line by line, including diagrams, tables and boxes. For Chemistry, especially Inorganic and much of Organic, NCERT is the starting point. Read first, then practice questions based on what you read.

Step 2: Build concepts before speed

In Class 11, focus on understanding. Physics needs clear concepts and regular numerical practice, and Chemistry needs a balance of Physical, Organic and Inorganic. Speed comes later, but only on top of a clear base.

Step 3: Study a little every day

  • One hour of Biology reading and revision.

  • Physics and Chemistry problem practice after every class.

  • A short weekly review of what you have covered.

Step 4: Revise on a schedule

Revise a topic the next day, then after a week, then after a month. Short, repeated revision beats a long cram, especially for Biology facts and diagrams.

Step 5: Test early and often

Take small chapter tests from the first month. Mark where you lose marks (concept gaps, careless errors or time) and fix them. Our article on analyzing a mock test shows how.

Step 6: Protect your school marks

Class 11 and 12 school exams matter too. The good news is that NEET preparation and the board syllabus overlap a lot, so steady work does double duty.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring NCERT because a reference book looks more impressive.

  • Leaving Biology revision for later.

  • Taking tests only close to the exam.
