JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: Differences Every Aspirant Should Know
GyanSanchar · 28 Oct 2026

Many Class 11 students use "JEE" as one word, but there are two separate exams. Understanding how they differ early helps you plan your preparation.
The short version
JEE Main | JEE Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA) | One of the IITs, on a rotating basis |
Leads to | NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes; also the qualifier for JEE Advanced | The IITs |
Who can appear | Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 | Only students who qualify through JEE Main |
Difficulty | Moderate, closely tied to the Class 11 and 12 syllabus | Higher, with more application and multi-step thinking |
Pattern | Fairly stable from year to year | Can change from year to year |
Rules on attempts, pattern and eligibility are revised from time to time. Always check the official NTA and JEE Advanced notices for the current year.
Why you should prepare for both together
The syllabus overlaps heavily. If your concepts are strong, JEE Main becomes a speed and accuracy exercise, and JEE Advanced is an extension that asks you to apply those concepts in unfamiliar ways. Students who prepare only for Main often struggle to step up later, while students who build deep concepts from Class 11 find both easier.
How the preparation differs
For JEE Main
Practice a lot of questions in a timed setting. Speed and accuracy matter.
Master the NCERT concepts, especially in Chemistry.
Take full mock tests in the real exam pattern.
For JEE Advanced
Solve harder, multi-concept problems and take your time to think.
Learn to handle different question types, since the paper style changes.
Analyze every mistake deeply instead of moving on.
A sensible plan
Spend Class 11 building concepts and problem-solving habits. Use the first half of Class 12 for advanced problems, then shift gradually to mock tests for Main. After Main, switch fully to Advanced practice for those who qualify.
At Gyan Sanchar, our IIT JEE courses follow a similar path, from basic concepts to advanced problem solving, then a JEE Main test series with mentoring. Book a free demo class to see how it works.
